Foreword

The Purposes of This Book are:-

The Remit Of This Book

As this is a guide to British rock and pop in this era, entries are largely confined to British-born artists. To qualify for an entry they had to release vinyl, or at least cut some demos. I've taken the liberty of including several musicians and bands from Ireland and I've also included a limited number of artists - such as The Easybeats, Jimi Hendrix, Gary Wright and Mark Wirtz - who weren't British by birth, but were based in Britain when they achieved their success and were an integral part of the tapestry of British rock and pop in this era. A case could possibly have been made for including several others, but constraint of space has made this impossible.

This is a vast volume, with over 3,400 entries and, for reasons of space, a comparatively limited number of mainstream pop artists (mostly ballad singers) have had to be omitted.

Early sixties instrumental combos like The Shadows, Tornados and Peter Jay and The Jaywalkers, who musically predated the beat era, where our story begins, are outside the remit of this book. Similarly, those punk acts, getting underway in 1976, which marked the start of another exciting era, are excluded, as are ska, bluebeat, reggae and soul acts.

How To Use This Book

All bands and solo artists appear in alphabetical order. 'The' has been ignored as the first word of the band's name. Individual artists have been alphabetised under surnames, e.g. Mike Absalom appears in the 'A's.

Some entries are very brief, where bands or artists just released one 45 of appeared on a compilation, but for more prolific acts expect to see the following:-

Assorted Information About The Band Or Artist

In the text, the name(s) of other bands or artists who are featured in this book appear as hyperlinks to facilitate easy cross-reference. Click on these to go to the related entry. Where bands have tracks which are also included on compilations these are also identified in italics as for all but the most ardent collector they will be the only means of accessing the song. A list of all compilation albums referred to, along with label details, catalogue numbers and (where known) year of release, appears in the compilation section of this book. Some of these compilations had very limited pressings and are also rare now. Click on the hyperlinks to view relevant the compilation listing/band entry.

CD Releases

Many albums referred to in this book have now been repackaged on CD and this is often referred to in passing beneath the album discographies, where known. It has proved impossible to keep abreast of the flood of these reissues so the information is not comprehensive. Many CD compilations are also appearing and those known to the author are included in the compilation section of the book.

A Rarity / Sought-After Scale

Those albums and EPs which are rare and sought-after (obviously there are some rare records that nobody wants) have been given a rating to the right of the year of release. Obviously too, lots of the albums and some of the EPs mentioned can be obtained in their country of origin relatively easily. The scale below can only give a rough banding guide to value and is provided for guidance only:-

SC Scarce £15 - 30
R1 Rare £30 - 60
R2 Very Rare £60 - 120
R3 Extremely Rare £120 - 300
R4 Ultra Rare £300 - 600
R5 Seldom offered for sale but very sought-after More than £600

PLEASE NOTE:- Any guide to the value of records is highly subjective. Any value will depend on the condition of the vinyl & sleeve, the local geographic scarcity, and the retail 'chain' (i.e. dealers will have a markup - they will probably offer less when buying an album than selling it). The value will also vary with time, and may go up or down. Ultimately the price at which you buy or sell any record is an individual decision, and Borderline Books, it's owners, employees and related companies cannot accept responsibility for the accuracy of this guide, or for any economic loss which may be encountered with regard to the use of this material.
