I Went Out With My Baby Tonight/So Long |
(Decca F 12244) |

Moses K and The Prophets evolved from a Belfast band The Madlads who took over Them's residency at Belfast's Maritime Club. The band was managed by Eddie Kennedy (who later managed Taste) and they also played The Rhythm & Blues Club and The Bastille Club in Dublin.
The Mad Lads were an excellent live band, with a tough Blues / R&B repetoire, much influenced by Them, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker and Sonny Boy Williamson. Both Billy and Kenny were members of the group and I remember Kenny telling me that they were going to make a record for Decca. I think Mervyn Solomons helped Eddie Kennedy secure the Decca deal as he was the Decca distributor for Ireland at the time. Presumably the band had to change its name to avoid problems with the Stax Records group of the same name.
Kenny McDowell was later in Them.
Compilation appearances have included: I Went Out With My Baby Tonight, and as The Mad Lads: I Can Tell, Strangers, Little Queenie and Answer Your Phone on Belfast Beat Maritime Blues (CD).

Based in West London, this interesting psychedelic group started life in 1964 as The Side Kicks and later changed their name to The Key. Apparently, their drummer made an acetate of recordings from this era. By 1967, they had changed their name again to Kaleidoscope and signed to Fontana.
Their first 45, Flight From Ashiya, was an amalgam of pop and psychedelia, it told the story of the pilot of a crashing aeroplane. It picked up quite a lot of airplay but failed to chart. Some collectors seek out the Dutch release, which came with a different picture sleeve. After a further, equally good 45 (A Dream For Julie), sadly also flopped, the group were afforded the opportunity to record an album. The result, Tangerine Dream was a varied collection of psychedelic pop with whimsical lyrics often delivered in that breathless style that characterised the UK genre. It featured both sides of their debut 45 and the flip of their second (Please Excuse My Face). The opening track was fittingly called Kaleidoscope. Other highlights were Dive Into Yesterday, a typical slice of whimsical pop psychedelia; (Further Reflections) In The Room Of Percussion, which had some great vocals and out of tune strings; A Lesson Perhaps, with its spoken lyrics; and The Sky Children, a fairytale dream, which was very much a preview of some of the material on their second album. Tangerine Dream came in a superb psychedelic sleeve.
The band appeared on several BBC radio shows for overseas broadcast which brought them into contact with deejay David Symonds who became their manager. BBC transcription discs of this material exist but are rarely offered for sale and are obviously expensive. There's also been a bootleg EP containing versions of Flight From Ashiya, A Dream For Julie, The Murder of Lewis Tollani and Dive Into Yesterday from these sessions, and the sessions also make up the bonus material included with the Footprint CD reissues.
Their next 45, Jenny Artichoke, was distinctly less psychedelic than the previous two. Its singalong style makes it less interesting too, but the fact it was not featured on either of their albums has made it collectable.
Their second album Faintly Blowing had a slightly more 'progressive' feel and contained psychedelic gems like Music with its liberal use of phasing and electronic sound effects, and Snapdragon, along with acoustic numbers like Poems and I'll Kiss You Once. Many of the songs had a story line or moral, none more so than A Story From Tom Blitz, the fictional story of an unfortunate traveller who tries to chat up a pretty female on a train journey in the USA. The girl slips him a potent liquid which gets him drunk and he ends up in the County Jail with a sentence of six months hard labour. Whilst in jail he pals up with an old cowboy, for whom he is caught trying to steal a horse and duly receives an extended sentence!
Their last two 45s, Do It Again For Jeffrey and Balloon, were very much in the style of Jenny Artichoke and were less interesting. The 'B' sides were from the Faintly Blowing album but the fact the 'A' sides were unavailable elsewhere has made them minor collectables.
With the decade at a close and a commercial breakthrough still eluding them the group agreed a change of name to Fairfield Parlour and with it came a different musical direction and label (Vertigo), although they also recorded a one-off 45 for the Isle of Wight festival (under the name I Luv Wight).
Sadly, on 1st May 1999, Steve Clarke was killed by a car as he walked across Chelsea Bridge in London.
Compilation appearances have included:- Flight From Ashiya on Psychedalia - Rare Blooms From The English Summer Of Love (CD), and Sgt. Salt And Other Condiments; Flight From Ashiya and A Dream For Julie on Rubble Vol. 4: 49 Minute Technicolour Dream (LP) and Rubble Vol. 3 (CD); A Dream For Julie on Illusions From The Crackling Void (LP); Jenny Artichoke on the British Psychedelic Trip, Vol. 3 (LP) and the previously unreleased Nursey Nursey (later released as part of the White Faced Lady album) came on a disc (BOB 23) given away with the fanzine 'Bucketful of Brains No. 29'. Peter Daltrey also had a solo album released on Voiceprint in 1995.

Another interesting singer/songwriter/guitarist of the period. Kane's first album was one of the many for which John Paul Jones worked on arrangements prior to joining Led Zeppelin, and it was produced by Steve Rowland of Family Dogg. It's best described as a mixture of rock, pop psych and ballads.
On the second album the "Heads" side is a dramatic suite of four stark songs linked by jagged psychedelic noise although the album concludes more conventionally on Side Two (the "Tales" side). Ron Geesin was involved in creating the 'sounds' and Dave Pegg (later of Fairport Convention) played bass.
Kane was an associate of Peter Sarstedt and Tim Hollier; indeed, some of the songs on the second album were also recorded by Hollier.
You can also find The Inbetween Man on the CBS double compilation album Fill Your Head With Rock.

Originally formed in London with line-up (A). They split late in 1968 after achieving little success.
They were reformed in 1969 by former Pretty Things' drummer Viv Prince. Shout It could easily have been a hit - powerful vocals, chorus girls and some good organ work, the production just let it down.
Compilation appearances include: Don't Make A Sound on Circus Days, Vol. 6 (CD); Shout It on Circus Days Vol. 3 (CD) and Circus Days, Vol. 4 (LP); Strange Girl on Fading Yellow (LP).

In the sixties this guy was a songwriter and roadie for John Mayall among others. He was also the drummer in a pre-July outfit called The Tomcats for a spell. In 1969 he was in Thunderclap Newman and wrote their classic and timeless hit Something In The Air. After they split in 1970 he embarked on a solo career and his output in this capacity is highly-rated by those that know it. He also wrote The Who's Armenia City In The Sky.

Dennis Ball and Cozy Powell had earlier played in Cirencester outfit The Sorcerers who spent much time in Germany. The Sorcerers didn't make it onto vinyl and later changed their name to Youngblood, becoming Ace Kefford Stand when the former Move bassist joined their line-up in April 1968. The above 45 was their sole slab of vinyl - the 'A' side was a inferior cover of The Yardbirds hit.
After its release, Kefford seems to have drifted out of the music business, whilst the remaining members went on to Big Bertha and were later in Bedlam. Cozy Powell was with The Jeff Beck Group in the early seventies for a while, then had his own band Cozy Powell's Hammer in the mid-seventies. He was later in Rainbow. Between Big Bertha and Bedlam John Ball was in Procol Harum and briefly played for Long John Baldry as did Dennis Ball.
Compilation apearances have included:- For Your Love on Perfumed Garden Vol. 2 (CD) and Rare 60's Beat Treasures, Vol. 3 (CD); Gravy Booby Jamm on Rubble Vol. 16: Glass Orchid Aftermath (LP) and Rubble Vol. 9 (CD).
